It is mainly used as an alkalizing agent. Disodium Hydrogen Citrate is a urine alkalizer. It works by increasing the pH of urine which makes it less acidic. This helps the kidneys get rid of excess uric acid, thereby preventing gout and certain types of kidney stones.

It is mainly used for the treatment of urinary tract infections, painful or difficult urination, kidney stones, urinary acidosis, urinary tract infection, micturition etc.
Common side effects includes diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, tiredness, frequent urge to urinate, unpleasant taste, stomach cramps, flatulence, change in mood.
