About This Product
Product description
Amoxicillin Capsule BP is a widely prescribed, broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic belonging to the penicillin family.
The "BP" designation signifies that the medication complies with the strict quality, purity, and formulation standards set by the British Pharmacopoeia.
It is primarily utilized in primary care to treat a wide array of mild-to-moderate bacterial infections.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin is bactericidal, meaning it actively kills bacteria rather than just slowing their growth. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. By binding to specific proteins inside the cell wall, it prevents the bacteria from building a stable structure during active multiplication, which ultimately leads to cell bursting (lysis) and bacterial death.
Primary Clinical Indications
Amoxicillin BP is highly effective against many Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms, making it a go-to choice for:
Respiratory Tract Infections: Acute and chronic bronchitis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, and bacterial pneumonia.
Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT): Otitis media (middle ear infections) and acute bacterial sinusitis.
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Uncomplicated bladder or kidney infections caused by susceptible bacteria.
Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Cellulitis and infected wounds.
H. pylori Erradication: Often combined with other medications to treat stomach ulcers.
Dosage and Administration
Standard Adult Dose: Usually 250 mg to 500 mg taken every 8 hours (three times a day), depending on the severity of the infection
Pediatric Dose:
Children are generally dosed based on body weight (typically 20–40 mg/kg daily, split into multiple doses).
How to Take:
For optimal absorption, capsules should be taken with a full glass of water between meals. It is critical to finish the complete prescribed course, even if symptoms clear up early, to prevent antibiotic resistance.
Side Effects & Contraindications
While generally well-tolerated, Amoxicillin can cause side effects:
Common: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or mild skin rashes.Contraindications:
Strictly prohibited for individuals with a known penicillin hypersensitivity / allergy. Cross-reactivity may also occur with cephalosporin antibiotics.
Precautions:
Patients with severely impaired kidney function require an adjusted, lowered dosage.
It is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, though you should always consult a doctor first.
